Steam Punk and Steam Train

What a whacky place this is. The Steam Punk HQ in Oamaru is completely bonkers inside and out. The machines outside have a slot into which you can deposit your hard-earned cash for them to spring into action. Or, in the case of the Mad Max-like train, belch out flames from its orifices. Whoever designed these installations must have been munching on the shrooms.

And that

Far more sober and less psilocybin-fuelled is the Oamaru Steam Train. This heritage railway takes you on a journey from town to the seal and penguin colony.

Leeds – that’s quite a journey back in 1924.

Omarama

After Oamaru, we turned inland to Omarama. After parking the van at the Top Ten campsite, Maria and I walked over to the Omarama Hot Tubs, where we had an appointment for a bit of hot water therapy.

The private tubs are filled with mountain water and heated by a wood fire, which can be controlled by lifting a flap to let more air into the fire. It’s simple, but it works.
